Far too many women and children live with fear of abuse
daily worldwide. Unfortunately this is also the case for some women in South
Africa. South Africa is rated the highest in the world when it comes to
violence against women. Thousands of women and children fall victims of abuse
daily.
According to the
independent Democratic Website, one in every three women will be raped once in
their life time. The report also highlighted that horrifying fact that babies
as young as three weeks old are being raped in South Africa. More than 30
percent of girls have been raped by the time they turn 18, this is according to
Education announcement on Talk Radio 702.
According to statistics someone gets raped every four minutes
in South Africa. 66.196 incidents were reported to the police in the past year,
and only 4.500 were convicted. Some cases are not reported and in some cases
the charges re dropped, if all the violent cases were reported the figure would
be higher than they currently stand.
Over half the women in the Gauteng province have experienced
some form of abuse, be it emotional, physical or even sexual in their life time
and 78.3% of men in the province admitted to perpetrating some form of violence
against women in the past.
